Financial Counsel & Planning
Who do you serve and what services do you provide?
Modera provides comprehensive financial planning services to individuals, families, trusts, institutions, and philanthropic organizations. We help with all areas of financial planning including investment management, debt management, cash flow and savings analysis, tax planning, risk management, and estate planning. Our services are designed for clients with at least $2 million in investment assets.
What does your process look like?
We know no two people are alike. Which means no two financial plans should be alike. Our first step is to meet with you to get a full understanding of your life goals. We then design a highly customized financial plan and investment strategy designed to help you achieve your specific needs and objectives. After the initial plan is developed we will serve as your ongoing partner throughout your financial journey to implement the strategies and respond to changing conditions and objectives.
What will the client service be like?
Throughout your relationship with Modera our focus is ensuring you feel consistently cared for. One of the ways we accomplish this is by keeping in touch on a regular basis. You will be serviced by a dedicated team composed of a lead advisor, a support advisor, and a client service advisor. Your team will be committed to helping you develop and implement your financial plan and will be readily available to you. You can meet or speak with us as often as you like – though we have found that typically two formal discussions per year supplemented by additional impromptu meetings and/or calls on an as-needed basis works quite well.
Meetings with your team can be in-person or virtual, depending on your preferences and your schedule. At these meetings we will review the progress of your plan and discuss any changing needs or desires. You will receive quarterly performance reports and, because we believe in full transparency, you will also have access anytime to your portfolio holdings, returns, and asset allocation through a secure, online client hub.

If I decide to work with Modera and hire your firm, what are my next steps?
You’ll begin by meeting with your dedicated relationship team to discuss your needs and objectives, as well as your current financial picture. You and your team will work together to prioritize your short and long-term goals, which will then be used as a foundation for building your initial financial plan and investment strategy.
Investment Philosophy
What is Modera’s investment philosophy?
We don’t believe in putting your money at unnecessary risk, but instead will guide you toward solutions that we believe are globally diversified, tax-efficient, and low-cost, with an aim to bringing you long-term results that are aligned with your unique financial objectives.
This approach utilizes the principles of Modern Portfolio Theory (a Nobel Prize-winning concept) to design portfolios intended to be well-diversified across major asset classes and accounts in a tax-efficient manner. We use low expense, highly liquid, institutional share class mutual funds and exchange traded funds (ETFs) to shift the focus away from the choice of individual securities toward the efficient allocation of capital across a broad range of asset classes. In addition, we offer higher net worth individuals access to individually managed accounts and private investments.
How often do you review my investments?
Our Investment Committee meets monthly, and more often when needed, to review all asset classes and portfolio investments. Your dedicated relationship team also regularly reviews your portfolio to ensure any special needs like cash requirements are addressed.
Do you hold my money in your name?
No, your money will be held in your personal custodial account in your own name. We recommend three main independent custodians: Schwab, Fidelity, and TD Ameritrade, and work with each custodian’s dedicated institutional service team on any administrative needs you may have.
Experience and Background
How long has Modera been in business?
Our roots go back to 1983, which means we have been dedicated to helping clients navigate the market and achieve their financial life goals for more than 35 years.
Has the firm ever been fined or a party to any litigation?
No, not in our entire history.
What credentials do your team members have?
All of our wealth managers have earned the Certified Financial PlannerTM certification, in addition to some of the other most valuable designations in the industry (CPA, CFA, MBA, JD, CDFA, EA, CLU, AIF, ACA, and ChFC). This depth and breadth of experiences allows us to effectively serve our clients and their unique situations.

Fiduciary
How can it benefit me that you are a fiduciary? Aren’t most financial managers and planners fiduciaries?
Registered Investment Advisers, such as Modera, are held to a fiduciary standard of care. As your fiduciary, we are legally obligated and personally committed to maintaining an allegiance of confidentiality, trust, loyalty, and disclosure to you. We place your interests first and act in your best interest at all times. We have no hidden fees, incentives, or compensation that may prevent us from providing advice in your best interest.
And no, unlike the advisers at Modera, not all financial professionals are fiduciaries. Before you entrust someone to manage your money you may want to ask if they act in a fiduciary capacity.
How are you compensated?
We are paid by our clients. We never receive compensation based on product recommendations or from sales or payments from third parties. At Modera, we believe that being a fee-only adviser helps to avoid possible conflicts of interest and better aligns our interests with our clients.
How is Modera’s financial planning approach different from Wall Street firms?
Because Modera is a Registered Investment Adviser, we are required to act in the best interest of our clients. We are also fee-only, which means we only receive compensation from our clients. Conversely, traditional Wall Street firms are composed of broker-dealers who are not required to act in the best interest of their clients and who can receive commissions from selling investment products.
